Oticon now has several routes for people who want hearing aids that sit in or close to the ear. Oticon Zeal, Oticon Own SI and the earlier Oticon Own family are not interchangeable, though. They differ in how they are made, how they handle connectivity, how much space they need in the ear and which hearing losses they can accommodate.
First, Zeal is not a traditional custom shell
Oticon Zeal is a discreet rechargeable in-ear hearing aid with flexible dome or micro-mould fitting. It can therefore offer an in-ear appearance without the manufacturing process used for a conventional IIC, CIC, ITC or ITE shell.
Own SI is the current tiny custom route
Oticon Own SI is custom-made from an ear impression and is offered in very small IIC and CIC styles. It is designed for patients prioritising discretion, but candidacy depends on canal anatomy, hearing-loss requirements, wax, handling and the space needed for components.
Where does the earlier Oticon Own family fit?
Oticon Own remains relevant because it includes a broader range of custom styles, including larger custom shells in selected markets and configurations. Those larger styles may provide easier handling or different feature options than an IIC/CIC. Availability should be confirmed when quoting.
Which option is least visible?
Visibility depends heavily on the actual ear. A deep IIC can be extremely discreet in a large, favourable canal. In another ear it may need to sit more laterally. Zeal is designed to be discreet but is physically different from a deep custom IIC. An in-person ear assessment is more useful than comparing product photographs.
Which is easiest to handle?
Very small custom devices can be difficult for patients with reduced dexterity or vision. Zeal’s rechargeable format avoids tiny disposable batteries, while Own SI prioritises minimal shell size. Larger Own styles can sometimes offer more surface area for insertion and controls. Handling should be tested, not assumed.
What about wax and moisture?
Anything sitting in the ear canal is exposed to wax, moisture and skin debris. Canal anatomy and wax production can affect reliability and cleaning needs. A patient who frequently blocks with wax may need a different style or a more structured maintenance plan.
Connectivity trade-offs
Zeal is built around newer wireless connectivity. The smallest custom devices often have tighter limits because antenna and component space are restricted. Does custom mean better sound?
No. Custom means the shell is made for the ear. Sound quality still depends on the hearing loss, acoustic venting, microphone arrangement, processing, fitting and verification. A receiver-in-canal hearing aid may be a better acoustic solution even when a patient initially wants something invisible.
REM and custom hearing aids
Verification remains important. Real-ear measurement helps check whether amplification is matching the prescribed target in the individual ear. The measurement approach may differ with very small custom devices, but the principle remains the same: do not assume software estimates are exact.
Which Oticon in-ear route should you choose?
Choose from anatomy and needs, not from the smallest photograph. Zeal may suit someone wanting rechargeability and connectivity in a discreet in-ear format. Own SI may suit someone prioritising a true custom IIC/CIC. Earlier Own styles may remain useful where a broader custom format fits better.
