Meet Ameera
Ameera Thokan is a dual-qualified Audiologist and Speech-Language Therapist based in Bryanston, Johannesburg. She graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a BA in Speech and Hearing Therapy and completed her community service year at Mapulaneng Regional Hospital.
Ameera works with both children and adults across a wide range of communication, hearing, and auditory processing needs. Her clinical interests include paediatric audiology, hearing assessments, hearing aid fittings and management, Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD), speech and language delays, autism, apraxia, literacy-related difficulties, and neurodevelopmental support.
Her practice offers a patient-centred and evidence-based approach, with services available in-practice, at schools, at workplaces, and through selected home visits. Ameera has a particular interest in making audiology more accessible for children who struggle with conventional testing environments. This includes natural sleep hearing screenings using OAE and AABR technology for infants and children who may not tolerate mainstream testing procedures.
In addition to diagnostic audiology and speech-language therapy, Ameera also offers vestibular (dizziness and balance) assessments, cerumen management, and hearing aid services for adults and elderly patients.
With experience across hospitals, private practice, schools, and special needs settings, Ameera is known for her warm and practical approach, strong interdisciplinary collaboration, and ability to explain complex information in a way that families can clearly understand.
Her additional training includes:
- PROMPT (Introduction) – tactile cueing for speech clarity
- DIR/Floortime-informed – relationship-based developmental support
- Makaton (Level 1) – sign-supported communication
- Further training in Sensory Integration, Cortical Visual Impairment, Autism, Apraxia, Hyperlexia, Auditory Processing, and related neurodevelopmental areas
Ameera is also the founder of Amani Inkd, a non-profit organisation focused on humanitarian initiatives and community support , a reflection of her deep commitment to helping people both inside and outside the clinical space.
